acupuncture
involves the insertion of fine flexible needles
into the body at specific points. these points
fall on meridians or channels of energy that traverse
the body and connect the interior of the body
to the exterior. by needling a point on a meridian
the acupuncturist can affect the flow of energy
along that channel and also the associated internal
organ that may be in a state of disharmony.
the needle insertion is normally painless and
once in place may be manipulated to elicit a sensation
known as deqi and will then be left in place for
approx. 20 minutes or more. a treatment would
normally involve the use of between 4 and up to
15 needles, depending on the diagnosis made.
