Volunteer Teacher - Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a variety of landscapes packed into a small island, from tea plantations to beaches. Sri Lankans are famed for their welcoming attitude and you will certainly find the welcome you receive in our projects to be no exception!
We have been working in Sri Lanka since 2002 and current projects focus on community-based teaching.
In the beautiful hill region of Kandy, MondoChallenge volunteers are working in various rural Buddhist temples.
These temples provide not only a place to worship but also a community centre. In Manikhinna, Digana, Sarasavigama and Ranawane, volunteers work in pre-schools and primary education while in Pilimathalawa, volunteers offer primary school and adult education classes involving many of the monks. Volunteers also help out at Bowalawatte School, Dharmashoka School and a Buddhist orphanage at Sarana Sevana. We have also been working, since the tsunami of 2004, with communities on the south coast, providing teaching support as well as helping local people to develop and sustain livelihoods.
For the volunteer, this is an opportunity to immerse oneself into the rich, Buddhist culture, to witness some stunningly beautiful landscapes, and to enjoy the friendliness and gentleness of the Sri Lankans.
The children are responsive and great fun, and the need is for enthusiasm and commitment from our volunteers, rather than formal qualifications. We offer an optional weekend short course in Oxford for those who feel they need extra teaching support. Qualified teachers are also welcome as they can assist with local teacher training.
In each country we have a local manager; we are very careful over security and health issues, and upon arrival you will be met at the airport by our manager and taken through an induction and to your placement to settle in.
