Comhlámh is Ireland's leading development education organisation with a particular focus on just and sustainable trade policies and practices. It promotes understanding of global issues and the cultures of the South through courses, public meetings and the media, and provides support, information and guidance for Volunteers going overseas and for returned Development Workers. A dynamic, independent membership body, Comhlámh has worked for over 30 years to improve practice in international development and influence policy of both government and non-governmental organisations. Managed through a board of directors, Comhlámh employs 16 staff. Reporting to the Director, the management team is made up of two Programme Managers and an Operations Officer. Comhlámh has an annual income of approximately €900k.
The Role:
- Provide leadership to Comhlámh’s advocacy, campaigning and development education activities
- Bring vision and strategic thinking in the formulation and delivery of a Strategic Plan 2009-2012
- Inspire and lead a motivated team of professionals and dedicated volunteers
- Communicate and proactively work with organisations within the international development sector, deepening strategic alliances and partnerships with like-minded human rights, southern activists and European activist bodies
- Build a strong public profile, and help develop secure and diversified sources of income
- Ensure that appropriate and efficient systems and procedures are in place
The Person:
- Organisation or project management experience focussed on strategic development
- Relevant third level qualification, ideally in developmental studies, human rights, management or the social sciences
- Familiar with international development, human rights and justice issues
- Ability to identify funding sources and securing funding, particularly in relation to the State, EU and major donor organisations
- Capable of engaging in debate in the media and with the government, influential and persuasive
- Personal characteristics of energy, vision and commitment
- Adaptable, mature and determined, a strong team player able to motivate and lead a dedicated team

While this position calls for management exposure, emphasis will be placed on candidates’ ability to work well with others, and their capability to lead the development and growth of Comhlámh. The person selected must be a self-starter, with the enthusiasm and credibility to influence. The remuneration package will be c. €70-75k.
