The Scout Association is the largest mixed (co-educational) organisation in the UK. Founded in 1907 and now in its Centenary year, Scouting continues provides challenge and adventure for adults and young people world wide.

Scouting is a values based organisation: working with young people and adults within the community, caring for the environment, encouraging self respect, and respect for others.

Scouting helps adults and young people to develop physically, socially, intellectually and spiritually by offering them an exciting and varied programme of creative, adventurous, and challenging activities.

Scouting is a stimulating and challenging hobby for adults who want to make a difference in their community.

Over 400,000 young people enjoy Scouting every single week. Whether it's a six-year-old Beaver Scout taking their first steps on a rotating climbing wall or a 20-year-old Scout Network member becoming the youngest Briton to climb the highest mountain in each continent, Scouting helps young people reach their full potential.

But there are still some 30,000 girls and boys on our waiting lists due to a shortage of adult volunteers.  With your help we can help inspire more leaders of the future.

We have opportunities for those who would like to become Leaders, opportunities for those who would like to help out occassionally, opportunities for trustees and administrators and opportunities for volunteer managers. Being part of Scouting will mean you rediscover adventure while contributing to your local community and developing  new skills.

You will also personally benefit from a variety of interesting and challenging experiences whilst meeting new people and having fun.

Collette
Beaver Leader

“I have experience of working with Special Needs children through my job and so when a child with Special Needs wanted to join his local Colony, I was asked if I could help out.

I didn’t have a Scouting background but I thought it was important the child was able to join in, so I agreed. That was two years ago and since then I have progressed from being a helper to a Leader because I enjoy the teamwork and companionship so much.

In terms of juggling my job with being a Leader, I find that if you want to do both you will find time to do them. In a typical meeting, the helpers and I will look after about 20 6-8 year olds. We play games, run activities and work towards badges.

Seeing the children grow in their confidence, self-belief and happiness is more than payback for me. I would say to anyone who is potentially interested – just do it – it’s great fun!”
