Mercy Corps is a global international relief and development agency with European Headquarters in Edinburgh. We employ over 3,400 people in more than 35 of the neediest countries in the world. Mercy Corps works amid disasters, conflicts, chronic poverty and instability to unleash the potential of people who can win against nearly impossible odds. Since 1979, Mercy Corps has provided over £600 million in assistance to people in 94 nations and reached more than 13.5 million people. Over the last five years more than 90% of the agency's resources have been allocated directly to programmes that help people in need.

Mercy Corps does not use template solutions but finds innovative ways, working with communities, to put people back on their feet and in charge of their own lives. Our aim is to leave behind, secure, productive and just communities. Mercy Corps has been in Afghanistan for 21 years and is the only INGO working in Helmand. The agency also works in Iraq, Sudan (Darfur and the South), North Korea, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Niger, Mongolia, China, Sri Lanka and many other countries where the cameras have gone but the needs remain. Our portfolio of activities includes: large health programmes in Pakistan; 13 microfinance institutions including an apex bank; IT centres of excellence in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan; a strong focus on youth development and much more.

Climate Change: Policy and Co-ordination

I have worked at Mercy Corps for two years and I now lead the climate change team in the European Headquarters in Edinburgh. It is an exciting time to be working for an international development charity when climate change is at the top of the news agenda. We have just calculated our carbon footprint at Mercy Corps and we are now evolving to address the threat of climate change in our programmes around the world. It is exciting to be a part of this process and know that the work we are doing in Edinburgh will have an impact in over 35 countries where Mercy Corps works. Climate change is a very real threat to the communities where we work, so it is imperative we address this issue and hopefully lead the way for others to follow. Needless to say there is never a dull moment in this job – and certainly no two days are ever the same!
