Hello and welcome to the People & Planet stall, we are the UK's largest network of students campaigning on the issues of world poverty, human rights, and the environment. We have more than 65 university groups and 70 sixth form groups across the UK representing more than 20,000 supporters. We have a long history of campaigning and campaign successes but have remained a radical, democratic organisation throughout.
As we are a network with no formal membership our groups are
autonomous and choose which campaigns they want to run. The
support office, which is in Oxford and employs 19 people, offers help, advice,
and training to our groups, as well as support on our key
campaigns:
- Ditch Dirty Development - demanding
that the UK Department for International Development stop using its aid
money to fund fossil fuel extraction.
- Go Green - cleaning up the environmental performance of UK universities and
colleges.
- Redress Fashion - supporting the
struggles of the workers involved in producing the cloths we wear, from
field to rack.
- Treat AIDS Now - holding the G8 to
account on their promise to provide universal access to AIDS treatment
by 2010.
We run three annual national events, which give students from across the country the opportunity to come together to receive training, share ideas, and discuss the network and its campaigns. Our national conference, Shared Planet, is the UK's largest student conference on the issues world poverty, human rights, and the environment. It is a full-packed weekend of big name speakers, skills and issues workshops, debates, discussions, art, and a massive party.
Following on, next year we will hold The Forum 2008, our
annual democracy event, when the network will come together to make decisions
about the campaigns we run and how we work in general. This will be followed by
the Summer Gathering, which is our annual week long training
event for particularly keen members of our network.

Joe Greenwood Universities events and training intern
The job title is pretty self explanatory, I support part of our universities network (specifically, those groups in the North East, Yorkshire, and London) by being their first port of call in the office and going on outreach visits to deliver training workshops. With my events hat on I'm on the organising team for our national conference, democracy event, and training event. Finally, I am also responsible not only for delivering training but also for monitoring, evaluating, and developing the workshops that we offer. It's all very exciting, and particularly sweet as I feel as though I'm doing something worth while.
