People who are volunteering with a view to finding a job at a campaigning organisation have the opportunity to win a £250 award. The Campaigns Volunteer of the Year Award 2008 was launched this week by The Right Ethos, a leading recruitment consultancy for campaigning organisations. The award will go to someone who has shown promise to keep going as a volunteer and aims to spur them on so they are less likely to have to leave the campaigning world because of lack of money. The Right Ethos wants to demonstrate that a standard way into campaigning is through volunteering. Jonathan Dearth, from The Right Ethos, explained: “We really want to get the message across that to break into this highly competitive field that you probably need to volunteer first. “We receive a significant numbers of CVs from young and newly graduated individuals who wish to start a career in campaigning. But sadly we generally can’t help them as they don’t have the vital experience that our clients need to allow them to campaign effectively.” The judging panel will be made up of Jonathan Ellis, director of policy and development at the Refugee Council, Gill Kirk of Lyric Communication and former director of campaigns and media for the RNID, and Chris Stalker, freelance consultant and former head of campaigning effectiveness at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations. As well as £250, the winner will receive a mentoring package from Jonathan Ellis, chair of the judging panel. The runner-up will also be awarded a mentoring package from a leading campaigner.
