I feel stuck and frustrated. I have couple of degrees in archaeology and have been working for few years as an archaeologist. But, now I want a career change into a field of indigenous affairs. I have long been interested in the topic and raising awareness of the issues they face. I also volunteer online for a NGO dedicated to help and support indigenous people. So, I know what I want, but don't have a slightest clue where to start and if this is even possible. I would be tremendously grateful for any advice. Ann Mold, a careers coach who specialises in working with people who want a job in international development, answers: Anything is possible! Although competition can be tough. Getting a job is a question of being able to match a job description and person specification. So, if there are jobs available in your desired field and profession and you can match the skills, experience and attributes needed, then it might be possible to make the change. Here are some steps that might be useful to take. You need to decide what professional skills you would be offering an organisation that works in indigenous affairs. What can you offer? Look at some jobs that you would love to be doing in say two and five years. So look for jobs that you would love to do, not necessarily jobs that you can do now. Find out what skills and experience they need. Then list the skills, experience and qualifications that you might need to gather. This then will give you a starting point and the beginnings of an action plan. You have taken the excellent move of volunteering in an organisation. Ask around and see what members of this organisation can do to help you with your research.
