Bursary for green initiatives

Ethical job seekers with ideas for a green community initiative have the opportunity to apply for a prestigious investment award.

The Jupiter Big Idea bursary is a new category in the Observer Ethical Awards 2008, now in their third year, and established to highlight efforts to progress social and environmental justice in the UK.

The category rewards individuals, businesses or groups who have devised a green initiative that has had, or could have, a large impact on their community.

“This area of the market is all about innovation and, as part of our business at Jupiter, we see lots of companies which have sprung from one person's vision for changing our future,” said Emma Howard-Boyd, head of socially responsible investment and governance, at Jupiter Asset Management, which is sponsoring the award.

“It could potentially change their, and all of our lives for the better. Through the award, we want to encourage people to grab the opportunity and put forward their big 'green’ idea.”

The Observer say entries could include a community composting project, a revolutionary energy saving product, or a local campaign to increase recycling which has had a really positive impact on the quality of life in your neighbourhood.

Judges include Observer ethical living columnist Lucy Siegle, Whitni Thomas, investment manager at Triodos Bank and Michael Bremans, managing director of Ecover, manufacturer of biodegradable cleaning products made from renewable resources.

They’ll decide the winners based on innovation, the ease with which the initiative or product could be replicated, and the difference that the prize money would make to development.

Entrants have to complete written statements about their idea and the winner will receive £2,000 and recommendations from the panel of judges on how best to use the funds. There will also be awards of £500 for two runners up.

“The Jupiter Big Idea award joins three other bursaries on offer this year, designed to really get initiatives moving,” writes Siegle on the awards’ website.

“Previous winners tell us this is the award that really boosted their campaign, project or business. In this way, the awards are instrumental in progressing ethical thinking and ideas in the UK.”

The awards also have categories for Ethical Business of the Year, Conservation Project of the Year and Campaigner of the Year.
