My ethical career: Environmental consultant

Age

24

Education
Degree in geography and an MBA in environmental management from
Liverpool University.

So, what do you actually do?
Advise organisations of more sustainable ways to dispose of their waste. This varies from advising companies on recycling equipment to how to set up recycling schemes. I also carry out environmental audits that identify and report on the environmental impacts of organisations.

What makes your job so ethical?
Green-Works Consulting is a not-for-profit social enterprise, with an environmental mission. In my role I aim to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill by offering commercially viable and sustainable alternatives.

What does your typical day involve?
Tasks range from visits to sites where companies dispose of or recycle their waste, to environmental auditing, report writing and troubleshooting.

What kind of personality and experience are needed for your job?

A consultant needs to be outgoing, methodical, analytical and a good communicator. It is a good idea to get as much experience as possible through placements and voluntary work with waste and recycling organisations.

What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had in this job?
The company used to be a small private operation with just three of us. We merged with one of the most prestigious social enterprises in the
UK. What really struck me was the benefits of being associated with a better known brand which also has social values.

What are the best things about your job?

The opportunity to develop my skills in the environment sector and the variety of work.

And the worst things?
Coming up against individuals who have no interest in the environment and having varying degrees of success trying to convince them to minimise waste or recycle.

What are your plans for the future?
I am committed to working in the environment sector and this could possibly include environmental politics.

Any top tips for someone wanting to get into this work?
Complete a degree, as well as a masters, in the area of environmental studies that interests you the most. Get relevant work experience whilst studying. I think that placements and voluntary work experience are key to getting into this sector. Forget that lazy summer break if this is the career for you.
