I did an access to social work course but would like to get a social work assistant post how do I go about it?
Julie Wardle, careers Adviser at Social Work and Social Care Careers answers:
A social work assistant assists the qualified social work team in the day to day running of the field work office. They usually carry their own small case load, attend reviews, write reports and advocate on behalf of service users.
There are many different social care employers offering work in the private, voluntary and statutory sectors. For vacancies in your local area you should look in your local newspaper, library, town hall or contact your local job centre.
There may also be local recruitment agencies that specialise in care vacancies. If you wish to work for a local authority you could contact their Social Services Department, additionally, they may be able to advise you of other social care employers in the area. The Department of Health's Social Work and Care Careers website has links to local authority websites.
The title of posts at this level may vary, so you should also look out for vacancies such as support worker or social care officer. Some employers may expect a relevant qualification such as an NVQ and / or previous care experience.
Many employers offer staff who have worked in these support roles, the opportunity to apply for social work training. This may involve attending university part-time or studying through the Open University whilst continuing in your job and salary. Some employers offer traineeships to study the social work degree full-time on a salary or training allowance.
