Working in the United Nations

How can I get a job working with the United Nations(UN)?

There are thousands of different career opportunities available within the UN, ranging from legal advisors to programme officers, and there are many different routes in. You can find out about vacancies by visiting the website of the particular UN agency you are interested in working for (e.g. World Health Organisation or UN High Commission for Refugees) and see what skills and experience are required for particular jobs.

One way in that's worth considering is applying for an internship and you can find details on individual agencies’ sites. These offer great first-hand experience of working for the UN, although you will frequently have to support yourself with living costs.

If you are over 25 and a skilled professional with several years experience in gender and development research, peace promotion, planning, energy and conservation and several other specialisms, another route in is by volunteering as a UN volunteer - isit
