Working for a charity

I am already working for a charity but find working in front of a computer all day very hard, and would like to strive for a more varied job in the future. I am confused about what ethical job I can aim for that lets me work with people and use my brain.

I have considered getting my Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and wonder if any interesting posts exist for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers within international development?

If you are interested in getting your TEFL diploma, the University of Cambridge (Esol) and Trinity College are the two main exam providers and their Cambridge/RSA diploma in ELT (DELTA) or Trinity College diploma in TESOL are recognised in language schools and centres worldwide.

If you are considering teaching TEFL / ESOL but want something a bit different, you may wish to incorporate teaching English overseas with community or youth work. There are many voluntary positions available and some paid positions which deliver this area of work.

Check out Idealist, DevNetJobs and Oneworld.net for possible openings. Also, have a look at the "Recruitment Agencies" section in the directories section of our website for further details of international recruitment agencies that you can post your CV with.

There are also positions available in the UK with voluntary organisations which support people who have English as their second language. For example, in many towns there are community groups which support refugees and asylum seekers, including delivering ESOL to prepare them for specific situations, such as trying to get a job or enrolling their children in school.

There are also charities like the YWCA Worcester which offer support and opportunities for disadvantaged or isolated women from the Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali speaking communities, including providing ESOL.
