Working ethically in IT
I’m studying IT — how can I get a job in an ethical sector?

You should start by getting involved with
The Free Software Foundation  and your local linux users group. As well as learning loads and getting lots of support, you’ll also get a chance to do some very useful networking — many non-profit organisations have limited resources so knowledge of free options is essential. You should also set up a homepage with your CV and links to projects you’ve worked on.

If you haven’t yet got any experience, it’s vital to remember that real world experience is as valued as a degree. So, if you’re having a hard time finding work, get some experience working on a free software project. You could do anything from beta testing and web design to technical writing and coding, and there’s also loads of potential experience you could be gaining, whilst helping build alternatives to commercial software. You can also use your skills to support a local community group — many will be only too glad of any help they can get with IT and it looks fab on your CV!

When you do start applying for jobs, ensure you really read what the job specification says and list all the ways in which you meet the employer’s needs. If there are skills you don’t yet have, emphasise how interested you are in learning them. If you keep seeing the same skills cropping up on job adverts, try to enrol in an evening course to get them or find a voluntary placement that will let you learn on the job.
