What voluntary work is out there?

I want to do some voluntary work but how can I find out about the opportunities?

If you’re based in or around London, one of the best places to start is the Guardian every Wednesday which lists hundreds of organisations seeking volunteers for everything from fundraising to marketing and helping in homeless shelters. Each advert gives a brief description of the work involved, the location and what benefits and expenses are provided (if any).

If you’re outside the capital and want to find something local, try looking in your local yellow pages or visit
www.yell.com and search under charities. Volunteering England has links to volunteer bureaux, who provide lists of organisations searching for volunteers near you.

There are also databases of opportunities available on the web covering every area of work and interest. If you are under 25, try Millennium Volunteers, who offer opportunities in the UK and a chance to get a certificate for volunteering, or WorldWide Volunteering for opportunities in the UK and overseas. Opportunities for people of all ages are also listed on do-it.org.uk and TimeBank.
