I want to work in overseas development and am considering doing a masters in development studies. Is this the right move? Many development studies courses give you a good general background to the issues but few practical skills. To get a good job overseas, you will still need voluntary experience and basics like first aid - see our top tips on volunteering for where to start looking. If you already have a general degree then a practical masters course in something like engineering or nutrition can, however, be a good move - there are lots of opportunities for specialists. If you want to work for a UK charity and combine the course with voluntary work, either during or after, then it does give you a good understanding of the issues. Finally, think about money. Can you afford the course and are you sure you are ready? You can always take time out to get skills and return later.
